Everybody has something they hold near and dear to them, expensive or not. However, there always is that extra twinge of pain from something terrible happening to a costly item you treasure. The valuable thing for those in an online forum was their luxury handbags. From being used as a trash bag to children doing the unimaginable, here are ten of the worst things that have happened to luxury bags.
1. Partner’s Mother Turns It Into a Trash Bag
A partner’s parents can be a tricky thing for some. One of the first replies to the forum shares their experience with an ex’s mother. According to the commenter, the mother had taken their Chanel messenger bag camping, where it “basically became her trash bag.” After it was returned, the reason for why she did this to an expensive bag was questioned. The only reply from the woman was, “C’mon, it’s not real. I don’t know anyone that would be stupid enough to spend that much money on a bag.” Indeed, a lovely woman.
2. Luxury Biscuits
I love kitties, especially when they knead biscuits on fuzzy blankets and pet beds. Of course, we must all draw a line in the sand somewhere, and this is definitely one of those lines. A forum user tells the tale of a trip to a cat cafe in San Francisco. Their belongings had to be placed in cubbies before being permitted to play with the cats. The bag’s owner thought their luxury item would be safe. Unfortunately, that thought was crushed when after they started to play with the furry friends, they “started to hear the sound of a cat making biscuits with leather.” After reluctantly turning to see what was causing the noise, they saw “a cat pulling up the front leather of my Boy Chanel every single time it raised its paw.” As a cat lover, I know the pain of seeing your furbaby destroy a beloved and pricey item, and the owner has my sympathies.
3. Water Bottle Catastrophe
This contributor described a Thanksgiving when they were incredibly thankful. They said, “I had an entire water bottle empty completely inside my Prada bag.” The bag had to go months without cleaning. Luckily, “I just had it cleaned at a leather shoe store with a Swedish bath, and everything came out wonderfully. I left the store with a big smile on my face.” At least they have something to be thankful for now that the bag is clean.
4. World’s Most Expensive Chew Toy
You’ve heard of dogs eating homework and chewing on shoes, now get ready for expensive handbag chew toys! “A friend’s Great Dane chewed up my Gucci bag while I was visiting” is how this story starts. In a sad state of affairs, the friends went outside, leaving the bag and dog in the house… alone. The dog took their chance and claimed the bag as its new toy. I can only imagine the scene when everyone came back in.
5. Jean Dyeing
Some jeans can dye the wearer’s legs blue while wearing them. If the dye can come off on the skin, it shouldn’t be surprising that it can come off on leather, too. A heartbroken user claimed, “I wore new blue jeans with a really cute white Kate Spade crossbody bag, and the indigo rubbed off on the backside of it.”
6. The Nightmare Flight
This story’s a double whammy, occurring on the way home from France. First, the respondent had a bottle of champagne they intended to bring back with them, and it broke on the flight, staining the inside of their Louis Vuitton keepall to this day. The second, and in my opinion worst, part of this nightmare occurred after leaving the bag alone to go to the restroom only to come back and face the horror of seeing a young boy deciding, out of all the places in the world, that the bag was the best possible place to relieve himself. Luckily the leather was not hit, but the owner was still furious and tried to confront the mother. The boy’s mother claimed not to speak English until a stewardess had to get involved.
7. Ink Explosion
This story starts simply enough. A pen in this person’s bag exploded, and ink got all over the inside. Bad enough, right? But this story has a twist: the bag should never have had a pen. The forum user never put ink pens in their bag. So, where did the pen come from? It turns out their niece played dress up with their bag on a day the contributor wasn’t around and left a pen inside.
8. A Series of Unfortunate Events
An individual shared a collection of the worst things to happen to their favorite luxury bag. “I cleaned the Vachetta leather on my Neverfull with a Mr. Clean eraser a little bit too aggressively and ruined the trim around the opening. Then, I recently sent it to a leather place I read about on Reddit, which will go unnamed for now, and now it looks worse to me. The leather didn’t match even close.” Sadly, the bag’s owner feels too embarrassed to use the bag out of “fear it looks fake.”
9. Two Reasons Never To Own an Expensive White Bag
This bag lover didn’t have just one round of lousy bad luck, but two! The first was when their white Tory Burch tote bag got red wine spilled on it after the owner got tipsy during Super Bowl Sunday. The outside was able to be saved, but the inside remains stained. The second casualty was a white Coach Cassie Crossbody bag. The trouble began when a small ink stain was found on the outside of the bag at the bottom and not visible unless you were looking for it. Having read that alcohol could be used to remove the ink, an attempt was made to clean it off, resulting in the stain not coming out but getting bigger.
10. Double Trouble
As a high schooler, a commenter was given a knockoff Louis Vuitton wallet from their mom to see if they would actually use a luxury bag and how well they’d take care of it. They proved themselves because, for graduation, they were given the real version of the wallet. After some time passed, the wallet owner went through their belongings to give them away. They accidentally gave away the genuine wallet, thinking it was the knockoff, and only realized their mistake after trying to buy something and finding it empty.
