How to Care for Platinum Hair

Location: Dubai Mall, Dubai

If there is one thing I love to change it’s my hair – I love swapping from dark to fair, straight to curly, from long to short and then back to long using extensions.  It keeps me entertained and to some extent expresses what I’m feeling at the time or marks a change of somesort. Before my wedding, I had long dark extensions put in as I felt that they matched the look I was going for on my wedding day. After my honeymoon, I had them removed and cut my hair short. For my 30th, I went for a drastic colour change (read more here), and the list goes on.

My latest change was to move from dark brown hair to a shade of platinum blonde. The process took about a year and it was a colour I have been trying to achieve since I was about 16 years old. I started slowly, adding a few lights here and there whilst remaining mostly brunette, until I finally did a full head of foils in the beginning of the year.  I’m so happy that I was finally able to achieve it but of course, excessive bleaching can take its toll on the hair. In addition, my natural hair has a lot of red pigment, which means I constantly need to treat it with toners to keep the colour ashy rather than brassy. Today’s post is all about the products I use to keep my hair both conditioned and toned, followed by a few styling products that I started using to achieve my soft beach waves (which so many of you have kindly complimented me on!).

Shampoo and Conditioning

Starting with my shampoo and conditioner routine. I actually use two shampoos and two conditioners, both for different purposes.  To start, I like to keep my hair as ashy as possible, and this takes effort.  For shampoo, I use Serie Expert Silver Shampoo from L’Oréal Professionnel, which was designed specifically for white, grey or platinum hair. As you would expect, it uses magnesium and anti-yellowing agents to leave you with bright glowing locks.

After shampooing, I towel dry my hair and condition with the Affinage Mode Cool Blonde Illuminator.  I love that the bottle comes in a 500ml size! This conditioner doubles up as a semi-permanent toner and continues on from the shampoo by neutralising those brassy yellow tones. I find this toning shampoo and conditioner so important to keep my platinum hair platinum, especially if I’ve been travelling to warmer climates. The sun, the sea, the chlorine and the UV rays all contribute to losing that salon finished bright clean look.

Platinum hair care is also all about maintaining the condition as well as the colour. All of the points stated above not only contribute to those copper and brassy tones, but also to dryness. The bleach already has a huge effect on the dryness of my hair and so any added external factors are extra.  I therefore not only use the products above, but also alternate them with conditioning treatments – or sometimes I use the toning shampoo and the conditioning mask or vice versa.  Whilst the toning products are good, they do not do enough when it comes to nourishing the hair. For shampooing, I started using Shu Uemura Art of Hair Silk Bloom Shampoo a few weeks ago and it has made my hair feel super soft and supple.  I’d strongly recommend it if your hair is feeling brittle and dry as it is made specifically for damaged hair and aims to restore the hair’s structure. It also contains argan oil.

For a more intense conditioning treatment, I towel dry my hair after shamooing and apply the Kérastase Resistance Therapiste Masque. This is a really thick butter-textured product that I like to apply and leave on under a shower cap. Like the shampoo, it aims to restore the hair’s strength and boost its elasticity.  It locks in moisture so that your hair feels silky smooth once you rinse it out.

Protection

Moving on in my platinum hair care regime, next comes the protection. Of course, after all the effort that went into replenishing my hair and repairing the damage, I want to make sure it’s protected from the heat it’s going to receive from either my straighteners or curling wand. For this, I apply Kérastase Resistance Ciment Thermique all over my towel-dried hair, paying particular attention to the ends.  Once this is on, I then continue to blow dry and either straighten or curl.

There are some occasions where I just let my hair dry naturally – normally when I’m not going anywhere afterwards. For those times, I just spray Cure Cure Replenishing Spray by ICON all over my towel-dried hair and plait it.

Styling

Last but not least, I wanted to end this post with a few of my favourite styling products, particularly as I have started curling my hair into soft beach waves, and I’ve received so many compliments and questions on how I get the look that I’m going to talk through what I use here.

The straight look is pretty basic – I just run the straighteners through my hair after blow drying. I’ve used the same straighteners for about 15 years and the brand has actually rubbed off at this point. Either way, I’m not sure how easy they would be to find after all this time.

The beach waves require a little bit more effort. For a start, after I have blow dried my hair, I use L’Oreal Stylista The Beach Wave Mist Salt Spray and use the uber convenient nozzle to spray an even layer all over my hair.  Note to other users, this product does help with the styling, but it does leave your hair feeling like you’ve just been swimming in the sea. After a day or two, I need to wash it all out.  I then use my shiny new GHD Curve Creative Curl Wand to create soft curls. I pin up my hair in sections and then wrap each section around the wand, paying attention to which way I want the hair to fall. This is important for the front bits – you don’t want your hair to fall like a curtain, so I make sure I wrap the wand from underneath.

After I’ve been over the whole head, I then gently run my fingers through my hair and loosen the curls. You don’t want to overdo it here, just enough to remove the goldilocks ringlets. To fix those loose waves, I then spritz Redken Wax Blast 10 all over. I just prefer the feel of the spray-on wax to a hairspray.

Lastly, to add a little bit of volume and to finish it all off, I pick up a few hair sections around the crown and backcomb them.  Whilst still holding the section of hair, I then use Redken’s Quick Tease 15 Backcombing Lift Finish Spray which works wonders for adding extra last minute volume!  I spray this over the section of hair that I have just backcombed from a distance until I get the volume I want.

And that’s it! It sounds like a lot but once you’ve gotten into the habit of using them all then it doesn’t feel like much at all. Would love to hear what other ladies are using to keep their hair in check, whether it be conditioning treatments or styling products, I want to hear about all of them!

Wow this post is awesome!! I’m cureently growing my hair out to donate (sometime next year) and then I want to go to a platinum pixie cut. So your product reviews are so helpful! Also my hair gets really dry and brittle so I’m going to check out some of those hair conditioning treatments and masques you mentioned—I’ll make sure to buy through your site if I can to support you💕. Lastly, my hair will not hold a curl but I’ve been dying to get some he beach waves look so I’m going to have to try your tips. Never used a wax spray but I’m not a big fan of the crunchy hairspray helmet either. How does the wax sprayed hair feel?

Thanks so much for the quality post!

Wow what a compliment! Thank you! It’s so admirable that you’re growing out your hair to donate to charity – go you! The combo of the conditioning shampoo and conditioner should really help if yours is feeling brittle and dry – let me know how you get on!

I also have the problem that my hair cannot hold a curl but somehow, using the L’Oreal spray and the GHD wand, they actually last about 2 to 3 days!! I couldn’t believe it!

Agree with you on crunchy hairspray hair, but this wax spray leaves your hair feeling a little harder, but still supple.

So glad that you found this post helpful and looking forward to hearing whether the products worked for you.

Love it! I went blonde for a while too. But the maintenance was too much for me. And I love a good sea salt spray too. Your hair looks sooooo good. Love the soft curls!

Thank you so much! Agree that the maintenance is pretty tough! Going to try my best to keep it as long as I can manage! xxx
