A week and a half ago, I turned 30. I feel as though we all build up to this number like it’s something to be feared or dreaded, with so many friends looking at turning another year older as something negative. I guess that moving up a decade makes us think about our twenties overall, and now that they are over and that we are a little wiser, we think back to everything we did or didn’t do. Instead of seeing this as something negative, it’s a great milestone to have hit and if there is anything we regret or wish we had done over the last ten years, it’s time to address it!
Remember that age is just a number and really doesn’t mean much. You are ultimately as old as you feel and the best way to feel young is to be happy in yourself and the life you have built. Here are some of the things I plan to do or focus on now that I have hit the big 30, based on looking back over my 20s.
In the first half of my twenties, I had no concept of health at all. I ate far too much of the wrong things, did not bother to exercise and consequently ended up piling on the pounds. I believe I would have continued on this path had I not have moved to London and discovered a new way of being. Whilst I only discovered plant-based eating in the two to three years before turning 30, I really want to make it a point to keep this up and focus on what I am eating. My sister is an excellent example of someone who has really shown how this is possible – she has managed to strictly cut out all meats, dairy, gluten and sugars and is looking the best she has ever looked (follow her here)! And for all those thinking well what can you eat, there is so much!! It’s just a case of changing your mindset and trying new things.
Grouped in the food bracket, I’m also going to throw in wine. I’ve taken to drinking a glass or two almost every night. I don’t think a small glass does any harm and I don’t do spirits, but following on with a healthier new 30-year old me, I want to reduce this. Instead, I’m filling a wine glass with water mixed with apple cider vinegar.
Lastly, I’m going to start the BBG program on the Sweat app. I actually completed the program last year and felt so good! Soon afterwards I moved house and that’s when I lost track of things. I want to get back on it starting this week. Writing it down here also means I’m more inclined to keep at it, rather than restarting every three weeks because I missed a session. As I get older I realise how important family is and how we should really make the most of it. In my early and mid-twenties I was more concerned with going out, socialising, being in the right crowds… there’s nothing wrong with this but I’m now at the point where what I enjoy most is being at home with my husband and puppy. Sounds boring, but when you have something going on almost everyday, some quiet time to lounge on the sofa with a film is amazing. I no longer feel that I need to be at every event for fear of getting fomo – there will always be another one.
Last but not least, I want to spend this next decade focusing on me and what I want to do. I wrote a blog post a couple of weeks ago about why I decided to start a blog and this really explains the direction I want my life to turn in. I’ve finally figured out what I want to do and plan to keep working on it until I get where I want to be. Just this realisation has made me so happy and excited about what is to come! Quite frankly, I have no time for anyone’s negativity or extra comments (follow this sentence with hair flick photo below). That being said, I’ve received such positive feedback from friends and family and hope that it might encourage readers to go out and do whatever they want to do, even if it’s scary at first. For me, it’s all about making me feel fulfilled with what I am doing and making me happier both mentally and physically – something which everyone deserves!
