Location: St Regis Saadiyat Island, Abu Dhabi
If you’ve been following my Instagram feed, you’ll know that I recently came back from the most amazing birthday holiday in Abu Dhabi. The holiday was split in two with a few days spent at the St Regis on Saadiyat Island and the last few days spent at Anantara’s Qasr al Sarab resort in Abu Dhabi’s empty quarter. We visited during the end of May and as you would imagine, temperatures were already scorching. In fact, if you don’t like the heat, you probably want to avoid visiting any later than April, given that the only two temperatures all year round are hot and hotter. Peak season is between October and April, with temperatures being slightly more bearable. Either way, the UAE is a summer destination and that means beach and pool time. After my trip I wanted to put this post together with three of my beachwear essentials – items which I wear over and over, year after year, irrespective of current trends. The pictures below were all taken at the private beach of the beautiful St Regis on Saadiyat Island, where the sand was whiter than white and the sea was the prettiest shade of blue.
The Classic Swimsuit
First things first, invest in a swimsuit that makes you feel like a million dollars. For this, quality is key. If you want your swimwear to last, invest in a good brand that uses high quality fabrics, has amazing cuts and ideally is chlorine resistant. By investing, I don’t mean heading to your local H&M – those may last you a season or two, but if you’re looking for a piece that will last year after year, this normally means going for something more upmarket.
Of course, if you are forking out a decent amount on a swimsuit you plan to keep for a few years, opt for a classic piece that stands the test of time. Cut-out swimsuits and ruffled embellishments are trending for 2018, but will you be wearing that in say three years time? For me, the cut that I love the most and tend to always gravitate towards is the high leg plunge swimsuit. I find that it suits my shape most and is so timeless. In fact, I bought the swimsuit I am wearing in these pictures in 2016, and plan to wear it for a few more years before retiring it. I had bought it from Eres in Burlington Arcade and I was so delighted that I found this store. It’s a Parisian brand that solely sells lingerie and beachwear, and all their designs are classic pieces made with fantastic quality materials. The cuts are, at least to me, so flattering. Each beachwear piece also comes with a handy little protective bag, so you can pack away your swimwear post beach without getting the rest of your beach bag wet. I’ve linked a few of my favourite brands and pieces below.
The second item in my beachwear essentials list is a chiffon kaftan. They are my all-time favourites and I think they are just so elegant. I find that they do tend to wear out much quicker than swimsuits, so I tend to pick up a few new kaftans each year. There are so many different styles! In the pictures here I am wearing an Asos black chiffon maxi dress with a thigh high slit, but I also love chiffon off-shoulder kaftans and jumpsuits. Below are some more of my favourites.
Lastly, my third beachwear essential is a pair of over-sized dark glasses, not just because they protect my eyes and face from the sun, but also because I think they look so glamorous! I try to purchase one pair a year, and then just keep rotating them depending on what I’m wearing. I’d say on average a quality pair of sunglasses last a good seven years if they are well looked after. I already have my fair share of standard oversized glasses (with a slight obsession for cat eye shapes), so this year I went for Saint Laurent heart-shaped glasses, just because they reminded me of something out of a Lana Del Rey song. They come in white too, if they took your fancy, and I have linked them below.
And there you have it! My top three beachwear essentials. I hope you love the pieces I’ve linked above and that some of them make it to your own wardrobe. What are your beachwear must-haves? Link them in the comments section below!
