Dave is currently at the airport and decides to share a story online about the flight he just took.
No Plane Etiquette!
On this flight, there was a lady seated two rows behind Dave. She talked incredibly loudly throughout the entire journey.
Earplugs Were No Match
Despite having earplugs in, the volume of her voice was so loud that he could still hear her. According to him, it was “piercing my ears”.
Sheer Dread
Upon landing, the lady across the aisle from Dave looked terrified and mentioned the loud couple was on her next flight.
In-Flight Etiquette
Dave decided to address the situation. He approached them, saying, “You guys are flying to Florida next, right? You may want to consider being a little quieter on your next flight. I had earplugs in, and I could hear you talking loudly the whole time.”
Name-Calling
Dave turned around and began walking off, when the lady’s boyfriend called him a “jerk.”
Repeat Insults
In response, Dave turned back. He asked what he did wrong, to which he was called a “jerk” once again.
Proving the Point
The lady joined in, claiming they weren’t even talking loudly. At this point, Dave showed them the earplugs in his hand.
Ears Wide Shut
He explained he had earplugs in his ears two rows ahead of them, and he could hear everything they spoke about, including “Frank’s wedding, the lady’s nail appointment, feeding their dogs, their cellphone bill, and the TV shows their mom watches.”
Crowdsourcing Opinions
When sharing his story online, he couldn’t help but ask, “Am I the one at fault in this situation?”
Virtual Verdict
One commenter mentioned that if he could hear them from two rows behind, even without earplugs, they were undoubtedly speaking way too loudly, especially with the background noise of the plane’s engines and other ambient sounds. In their opinion, the original poster is not in the wrong.
Applause for Dave’s Intervention
Another user expressed approval of his decision to speak with them. They humorously noted that by the time he talked to them, they might have forgotten what they were yelling about.
Beyond Normal
A user shared their personal experience, which led them to sympathize with the loud couple. He explained that his brother has a consistent issue with controlling the volume of his voice. He clarified that there isn’t any underlying physical condition to explain this behavior, making it a mystery why he always speaks so loudly. To measure the extent of the issue, he even downloaded a decibel monitor. They found that their brother’s voice reached the level of a “passing train,” which understandably drove them crazy.
Enough is Enough
A commenter shared their experience, recalling a flight to LAX where they had a fellow passenger who wouldn’t stop talking. To make matters worse, this person was also complaining about the wait in the line. Eventually, the commenter decided to take action and turned to the woman, telling her to “shut up.” The woman didn’t appreciate it and began complaining. Still, it was evident that everyone else in the vicinity was relieved that someone had finally called her out.
Questioning the Flight Attendant’s Role
In response, someone pointed out that if you could hear the details of their conversation from two rows away despite having earplugs, they were undoubtedly speaking way too loudly. They also suggested that it might have been a good idea to involve a flight attendant to address the situation. They questioned why the flight attendant hadn’t intervened, as it should have been noticeable. In their opinion, the original poster was not in the wrong.
