It was the week before Christmas – what was to be my first Christmas in London. For the last 30 years I have spent it in Malta, and more often than not, the sun is shining. As most of my readers will probably know, sunshine and warm weather in London, in December, is a bit of a rarity. And so when I got the email inviting me to visit the Park Hyatt Mallorca to experience some Christmas festivities in the sunshine, I was naturally sold! I’ve long been a fan of the Hyatt brand and how attentive they are to their guests. I had last experienced this at the Hyatt Regency Tashkent back in April.
The Park Hyatt strand of the Hyatt brand is at the very premium end of spectrum, where guests are invited to experience the personal, yet understated luxury that the hotels offer. The Park Hyatt Mallorca is no different and if you are looking for a luxury hotel in Canyamel, Mallorca, then look no further. Here is a detailed account of our experience.

Canyamel: Distance from Palma Airport
I’ll start with the journey we took to get our destination. We were up bright and early to catch our British Airways flight out of City Airport, flying directly to Palma. Flight time from London is approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes and at the time of booking, the cost was extremely reasonable. Of course, you will need to check prices when carrying out your own search (I’m not sure if they will remain so well-priced during peak season!).
As we touched down in Palma for the very first time, my husband and I were impressed with the sheer scale of the airport. The queues were all so efficient and everything looked brand new. First impressions of the island were great and I have to say the standards remained equally high throughout the weekend. Coupled with the weather, I suppose this is why Palma airport receives over 15 million tourists throughout the year, mostly in the peak season of July through September.
We left the terminal and found our airport transfer provided by the Park Hyatt Mallorca. We were delighted when we were escorted to a dreamy S-class, complete with refreshments, ample leg room, TVs at the back, mobile charging banks, ambient lighting and reclining seats. The high standard continues! This can be organised by the Park Hyatt, just reach out to them ahead of your journey.
It took approximately one hour to drive from the airport to the Park Hyatt Mallorca, which is located in Canyamel on the east of the island. We eventually drove up to the hotel, to what felt like a little village all to itself. Just like the airport, the scale was incredibly impressive. We drove through the entrance gate and stopped just in front of the reception building. At the reception, we were greeted by a beautifully decorated Christmas tree and warm and friendly staff. After being checked in and told about all the dining options that we available to us, it was time to explore.
A New Hotel in Mallorca
Opened in May 2016 as the first Park Hyatt Resort in all of Europe, the Park Hyatt Mallorca is located high up in the Canyamel valley, in the style of a traditional Mallorcan hilltop village. Natural beauty and tranquillity are abundant and it is the perfect location to escape from the world for a few days.
Unlike most hotels, the hotel site itself is a series of independent buildings, all connected via the same landscape architecture which pays respect to Mallorcan cultural heritage and local art, with the Spanish stoned walls, manicured terrace gardens and wrought iron decorative gates and archways – you’ll even see the odd fountain or water feature. It all blends in beautifully with the mountainous landscape.
Creating that village-like feel, is the piazza in the centre of the property, adjacent to the main lobby and reception building. Given that we visited at Christmas time, it was here that the hotel hosted their very own Christmas market, complete with a huge Christmas tree as the central focus and offering a variety of local produce, seasonal goodies and the obligatory cup of mulled wine. The piazza is also home to an imposing stone clock tower, a small fountain, bakery and two of the hotel’s four restaurants. More on that later.
Given the size of the hotel – it is after all a five-acre resort – it manages to retain its intimacy with the guests. There are 126 spacious guest rooms all with a private balcony/terrace and 16 suites (including 2 presidential suites) built within a number of different buildings, each with their own Mallorcan theme, such as figs, pomegranate, almond, olive, grape and a variety of citrus fruits.
In terms of the layout and how it is built as a series of small buildings connected by outdoor pathways, buggies are used to escort guests from one building to another. We walked most of the time, but the buggies definitely came in handy when moving around our luggage. It reminded me a little of other stellar resorts such as Qasr al Sarab in Abu Dhabi or Santo Maris Luxury Suites and Spa in Santorini.
The Best Hotel Rooms in Mallorca
Or so I’m told! Both by locals and reviews I read online before my visit. What makes them special is that the rooms are possibly the largest hotel rooms on the island of Mallorca. Upon entering, I asked if our room was actually a suite. Our porter replied that this was in fact a standard room! It must have been about 50 sqr metres in size, and that’s without me taking the balcony into consideration. For those that do not use Instagram, I’ll try to do it justice with words and pictures.
The room is built in a square with the bed at the centre of the room. Behind the bed is a partial wall, with doors on either side that slide into the wall. Behind this wall lies the walk-in wardrobe, complete with a large floor length mirror that covered the wall on the left hand side (that is, the wall behind which the bed lies).
To put this into perspective, as soon as you walk into the room, you will see this walk-in wardrobe. If you keep walking from the entrance of the room, through the large walk-in wardrobe, you arrive at an equally large bathroom – and let’s be honest, are there really any luxury hotels that do not have his and hers sinks? One thing that I always appreciate in hotel bathrooms is a good quality hair dryer – to me this is as important as free wifi! Another box ticked. The toilet is in its own confined area with a door, as is the shower and bath.
Heading back out into the bedroom area, the bed faces a large flat screen TV that was mounted to the wall, and on either side were large french doors that open out onto the balcony. The balcony overlooked the resort and the valley below, offering spectacular views. I could just imagine sitting on the balcony in the summer months, whilst watching the sun go down with a glass of wine.
Park Hyatt Mallorca Restaurant Options
There are enough food options to keep guests busy for a few days, with its four eateries Balearic, Tapas, Asia and Voro. Balearic is the main restaurant serving local cuisine, and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner all year-round. Tapas, is a more cozy and intimate evening bar-lounge style space serving the Spanish classic, whilst Asia draws on Chinese, Japanese and Indochine cuisine to transform the local produce. The flagship restaurant of the resort is of course Voro, which at the time of our visit had just received its first Michelin star and which playfully reinvents Mallorcan traditional dishes.
Park Hyatt Mallorca Amenities
Remember that this stunning hotel is in fact a resort, offering a little bit of Canyamel luxury to every kind of guest, no matter the age. I’ve already covered the different restaurant options at the hotel, but what about the amenities? Starting with the best way to relax – the spa. Serenitas Spa, located about 100 metres away from the main reception, offers seven treatment rooms, including two couples’ treatment rooms. As with all of the guest rooms, each has their own terrace. There is a selection of signature treatments using locally inspired therapies and the spa that includes a Himalayan salt sauna, steam rooms and an outdoor jacuzzi.
As would be expected of any luxury resort, the Park Hyatt Mallorca naturally offers its guests both indoor and three outdoor swimming pools including an adults-only whirlpool and pool (temperature-controlled), a family pool and a baby pool. Since we visited in December, we were not able to enjoy the outdoor pools as they were closed but these must be beautiful in the summer. And on the subject of adults-only, it’s not just the grown ups that have their own personal space – there’s a kids’ club for the younger guests too!

Additional perks include gym facilities, as well as free access to the Cap Vermell Country Club, which offers a whole host of other facilities and is just a 15 minute walk away. The country club offers paddle ball courts, two tennis courts, an indoor heated swimming pool and outdoor pool. In addition to all this, golfer guests have the choice of four impressive golf courses, including a full 18-hole course adjacent to the resort: Canyamel Golf (adjacent to hotel), Pula Golf, Son Servera Golf Club and Capdepera Golf.
Last but not least, we can fully appreciate that the Park Hyatt Mallorca is the dream hotel for events such as weddings but also for business meetings. This is where The Residence comes in. The Cap Vermell Residence is home to a selection of eight versatile meeting rooms and event spaces. Meanwhile the Park Ballroom is a spectacular 2,400 square foot ballroom with an extensive banquet terrace that overlooks the Canyamel valley.
As with all Park Hyatt hotels around the world, the Park Hyatt Mallorca exudes elegance and understated luxury in the Balearic sunshine.
